Infertility Treatment
Nearly 90% of all infertility cases, both for male and female parties, are overcome through infertility treatment including surgical and medical techniques. A lot of physicians and specialists are committed to developing a treatment plan specific to each patient’s needs that will lead to the desired result of conception. Patients and doctors work hand in hand during the course of the treatment to determine a perfect treatment option that will be most fitting for the patient’s situation based on financial, social, religious, ethical and medical factors. Offered treatment options include assisted reproductive techniques such as IVF and ICSI, ovulation induction to improve the production of eggs, surgery to repair reproductive organs and intrauterine insemination to increase the chances of egg fertilization by the sperm.
Ovulation Induction
One effective infertility treatment is taking in ovulation induction medications. These are fertility drugs used to stimulate follicles in the ovaries of women to result in the production of several eggs in one cycle. These medications also control the time that you release the eggs, or the time that you ovulate so that sexual intercourse, intrauterine inseminations and in vitro fertilization procedures can be done at the most likely time to achieve pregnancy.
However, the use of ovulation induction medications has associated risks. The risks include an increase in the chance of high order multiple births and the development of ovarian cysts. A rare side effect can also happen – ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), a condition where you ovaries produce more eggs than usual because of overstimulation. Symptoms include sever pain in various areas of the body such as the pelvis, abdomen and chest. One might also experience nausea, vomiting, bloating, weight gain and difficulty breathing.
Ovarian Drilling
Another infertility treatment is ovarian drilling. It is a procedure where in a laser fiber or electrosurgical needle punctures the ovary 4 to 10 times. This results in a dramatic lowering of male hormones within days and is often performed in patients who have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). A lot of women who fail to ovulate with other ovulation therapies will respond to positively when their medications are reintroduced after an ovarian drilling. Not much report is said about having side effects, but this treatment might result in adhesion formation or ovarian failure if there are complications during the procedure.
Intrauterine Insemination
IUI is a procedure in which the male’s sperm is placed directly into the uterine cavity through a catheter near the time of ovulation. This is usually performed when there are problems with the sperm (low sperm count or low motility, incompatibility between the sperm and the cervical mucus, etc.). This infertility treatment increases the chances of pregnancy because the sperm are placed directly in the uterus, bypassing the cervix thus improving the delivery of the sperm to the egg.
